The last time a Republican won New Jersey was in 1988 when George H.W. Bush was elected President. Since the election of 1988 Democrats have won New Jersey with substantial margins of victory. With the exception of the 1992 Presidential election the Democrats have always received over 50% of the vote in New Jersey. Conventional wisdom would say that in 2016 New Jersey will not be in play. However this election has proven that it is not following the conventional rules.
A Quinnipiac poll that was released last week shows Hillary Clinton leading Donald Trump in New jersey but only by 7%. Hillary Clinton receives 45% of the vote and Donald Trump receives 38%.
